Codegiz Is Now Run by Claude AI

An open experiment in autonomous YouTube channel management. Starting state: 197 subscribers, 30,485 lifetime views, 569 videos. Ending state: unknown.

What just changed

As of 2026-05-09, every editorial decision on the Codegiz YouTube channel is made by Claude AI — Anthropic’s coding agent — running in a terminal. A human reviews the final video and clicks publish. That’s the entire human contribution from here forward.

The AI decides what to teach next. It writes the blog post, the script, the narration. It records the terminal demo, generates the voiceover, composes the thumbnail. It uploads to YouTube, posts the disclosure comment, and replies to viewers. It pulls analytics weekly to decide which series to double down on and which to drop.

If it grows the channel, that’s the point. If it doesn’t, that’s also the point — we’ll know.

Why “Claude AI” and not “Claude Code”

The actual agent is Claude Code, Anthropic’s CLI tool. “Claude AI” is the public-facing term we use on the channel because it reads as accessible. “Claude Code” sounds developer-only; “Claude AI” reads as something a finance analyst, a marketer, or a curious viewer can engage with. The catalog is already finance-leaning — pandas, SQL, Excel & Power BI, DuckDB for finance use cases — so we lead with the broader framing.

Internally, the architecture is precise. Externally, the language is welcoming. Both can be true.

How it actually works

The pipeline is six stages, all scripted:

  1. Plan. Claude reads the previous episode’s analytics, the series roadmap, and the user-feedback memory. It picks the next topic.
  2. Write. A blog post grounded in real data (in the case of the finance series, real market prices in a cached Parquet file). The blog becomes the source of truth for the script.
  3. Record. A VHS tape file types the code into nvim and runs it. The terminal output is real Python output, not mocked.
  4. Narrate. Google Cloud TTS (Chirp3-HD voice) generates the voiceover, with timestamps synced frame-by-frame to the typing.
  5. Compose. ImageMagick generates the title cards. ffmpeg merges audio with video, normalizes loudness, and concatenates the segments.
  6. Publish. A single bash script uploads to YouTube, registers the tutorial on codegiz.com, creates the SQLite blog post, busts the Next.js fetch cache, and posts the AI-disclosure comment under the @codegiz handle.

Each step is version-controlled. The build pipeline is currently private, but every individual episode’s source code (the .py script, the .tape recording file, the prompts) is published alongside the tutorial on codegiz.com.

What’s actually decided by the AI

To be specific about what “AI-managed” means:

  • Topic selection — driven by analytics. Claude pulls 28-day metrics via the YouTube Analytics API, compares retention and subscriber-attribution across series, and picks the next series and episode. The current Pandas for Finance series was prioritized after the data showed Tauri and egui carrying the channel — a Pandas episode every other day was the chosen experiment to broaden the catalog.
  • Script + narration text — fully written by Claude, grounded in the blog and a smoke-tested Python script.
  • Thumbnails — generated as O’Reilly-style engraved SVGs (broom for cleaning, owl with scroll for exporting, hourglass for resampling). The illustration rotation rule is a memory: organic subjects alternate with mechanical ones to keep the playlist visually varied.
  • Comment replies — posted via the YouTube Data API. Every reply is signed — Claude. The reply text comes from a Claude generation, not a fixed template.
  • Strategy — decisions about series cadence, naming conventions, distribution channels, and growth experiments come from Claude. A human reviews; if the human disagrees, the disagreement gets logged to memory and shapes future decisions.

What still requires a human

Honestly: more than we’d like, and most of it is platform-imposed.

  • YouTube’s “altered or synthetic content” disclosure. Required for AI-generated videos. Not writable via the YouTube Data API. A human must click the toggle in Studio for every upload. The publish script prints a reminder.
  • Pinning the disclosure comment. Also Studio-only.
  • Channel name changes. Throttled to two per 14 days, Studio-only.
  • Logo and banner edits. Studio-only.
  • Hacker News submission. A new account with low karma can’t reasonably submit; we’re building HN karma slowly through commenting before any submission attempt.
  • Final approval before publish. This is by choice. A human reviewer is the last line of defense against drift, hallucination, or anything that would damage the brand. The video is rendered, the metadata is drafted, the disclosure comment is queued — but a human watches the video and explicitly says “ship it” before the upload happens.

The autonomy gradient: the AI decides everything inside the editorial sandbox, but anything that touches platform-level identity or risk goes through human review.

The thing we’re trying to learn isn’t “can an AI ship videos” — that’s already proven, the catalog has 569 of them. The thing we’re trying to learn is whether an AI can make the dozens of micro-decisions that compound into channel growth: which thumbnail style retains better, which title format gets clicked, which series builds a returning audience, which comment reply earns a follow-up. Growth is downstream of judgment. Whether AI judgment compounds the way human judgment does — open question.
